How to Test Your Gun Safety

There is a lot of debate about gun safety and gun laws in the news lately. Whether an individual believes people have the right to carry guns or not, every individual who handles a gun needs proper gun safety. How to test your gun safety means knowing what to do when and where guns are in use and how to keep yourself and everyone around you safe when a gun is present.

It is always a good idea to learn how to test your gun safety when you have a firearm in the home or use them for sport. Knowing what to do before a gun drops on the ground or a gun is knocked to make sure it does not fire is the best way to keep yourself and everyone around you safe.

  1. Remove the bullets to unload the gun. This may be done by taking out the magazine or clip in newer guns and in some guns simply removing the bullets from the chamber.

  2. Set the safety trigger. On most handguns, the safety trigger is actually a button near the placement of the thumb but behind the trigger. It will be easy to locate.

  3. Point the gun away from yourself and others. If you are at an indoor gun range, point the gun down the alley towards the target. If you are at an outdoor shooting range, then point the gun toward the safety zone or buffer area away from everything.

  4. Pull the trigger and listen for the gun to dry fire. The trigger lever or safety button should return to the "off" position. If the trigger lever or safety button goes to the "off" position then your gun safety is working properly.

  5. Point the gun away from yourself and other. If you are at an indoor gun range, point the gun down the alley towards the target. If you are at an outdoor shooting range, then point the gun toward the safety zone or buffer area away from everything.

  6. Pull the trigger and listen for the gun to dry fire. The trigger lever or safety button should return to the "off" position. If the trigger lever moves slightly but does not fire, then the safety is not working properly and the gun needs to be taken to a gunsmith for proper repair.
