Learning about food safety is important because it teaches information that can benefit your health. Every year many people get ill from food that has been handled improperly at home or in a restaurant. Training and testing for certification in food safety is a relatively easy task whether it is needed for work or home.

  1. Contact local technical colleges or universities to see if they offer a class or course in food safety. Some colleges offer courses without having to enroll in school. Be sure to ask about prerequisites for enrolling. Taking an online course may be good a choice if you need to work around a hectic schedule. Whether it is on a campus or online, find a course that fits your needs.

  2. Take all courses needed to take the exam. Some courses last only a day with an exam being given at the end. However, other courses may last longer. The length of courses depends on how in depth they are. Most food safety course cover things such as: food preparation, sanitation, high-risk foods, food related illnesses and food storage.

  3. Practice food safety in the home setting to get into the habit. There are also practice tests available online. Practicing will not only help you do well on your test but it helps to keep you and your family healthy.

  4. Take the exam once you have completed all the necessary training. Upon passing the exam, certification will be awarded. Be sure to find out how long certification is good or if it expires. Continue to practice safety in case you should have to take the certification exam again.
