How to Test for Mold in Carpets

If you detect a strong smell of mold when you walk into a room and cannot locate mold on any of items in the room it is highly possible that is coming from the carpet. It is highly recommended that you test the carpet.

Testing your carpet for mold is something you can easily do yourself.

  • Knell down on the carpet in the area where you think the odor is coming from and sniff to determine if it is the source of the smell. You will know immediately if this is where the smell is coming from because it is a musty smell that is very distinguishable.

  • Check the carpet for any unusual spots or stains. The stains are normal green, black or brown and are circular in shape and spread out in the middle.

  • Contact a mold testing facility to test the carpeting for you if you are still unsure after performing your own test. They will charge a fee for their services, but it is better to be safe than sorry. There are even some labs that will allow you to send in a sample for them to test, which would probably be less expensive than having the company come out to your home. They would simply have you to wrap a piece of sticky tape around your hand and to press it down on the area you would like to be tested. You would then place the sample inside a plastic bag and send it off to their lab.
