How to Test the Chevrolet HHR
The Chevrolet HHR was first introduced to the automobile market in 2005. Because it is a relatively new model of car, all versions feature a computer driven on board diagnostic system which is responsible for controlling and monitoring the power train.
The role of the ECM is as the central brain of the HHR's diagnostic system. If the vehicle is malfunctioning, whether the transmission, engine, engine management, fuel or emissions system, the ECM will produce a diagnostic code. This will cause the check engine light to turn on, informing the driver of an issue. The driver can then have a diagnostic test run on the HHR in order to read and determine the code.
Items Needed:
- Diagnostic code reader
- Pen and paper
- Ignition key
Instructions:
- Take a seat in the vehicle's driver's side. Have the code reader as well as the pen and paper with you.
- Find the diagnostic port located underneath the dashboard on the driver's side. It is a small and rectangular connection port similar to the tip of a computer printer cable.
- Insert the data link cable of the code reader into the diagnostic port.
- Insert the HHR's key into the ignition and start the engine.
- Perform a quick test on the vehicle's ECM as per the code reader manufacturer's instructions. The instructions should be outlined in the device's operating manual. Follow the given prompts as displayed on the code reader's screen. This will show the ECM diagnostic codes.
- Write down the code or codes displayed.
- Follow through the diagnostic test prompts to completion and then turn off the device.
- Remove the data link cable from the port.
- Turn off the ignition.
