How to Thicken Cat Fur

When your cat starts to lose their naturally thick hair, the first thing to do in thickening their fur again is to determine what is causing the problem. There are some things that will cause hair loss on a cat, like pregnancy that just has to be dealt with until the cat is no longer nursing, other causes such as allergies or poor diet can easily be remedied.

  • Diet: If your cat's diet is the cause of their hair loss, rectifying it by feeding them food that is high in healthy fats is the key. There are many commercial cat foods on the market that contain added fats, or you can simply add 1 tsp. of olive oil to the food they are already eating. Do this each time you feed your cat.

  • Allergies: Take your cat to the vet to determine if allergies are the cause of their hair loss. If the cat has an allergy to something, it may be causing inflammation or swelling that causes the hair to fall out and thin in certain places. Scratching may also be a cause of hair loss and thinning if the cat has fleas. If your cat is diagnosed as having allergies, then giving them an anti-inflammatory medication that you can find in most pet stores will help the swelling so that they can regrow their lustrous coat once again. If your cat has fleas, monthly medication should be applied to help keep your cat from getting them again.

  • Stress: Stress can also cause your cat to lose their hair just like in humans. Taking your cat to the vet can help you determine if stress is the cause of the hair loss. If your cat is stressed out about something try giving them anti-anxiety medication or removing the stressful situation such as children, other pets or maybe even keeping them inside the house.
