How to Tile Around a Fireplace
If you are tired of looking at an outdated brick fireplace, it is now possible to change the look without extensive renovations. Many people are choosing to cover their old fireplace bricks with tile, which can easily change the entire look of the room.
How to Tile Around a Fireplace
Remove the mantel of the fireplace and put masking tape on the edges.
Use a trowel to spread a coat of thinset over the bricks to create a smooth surface. Allow it to dry over night.
Install a temporary support ledge by installing a piece of wood at each end of the fireplace. Secure the wood with drilled in masonry screws.
Apply a band of thinset across the top of the support ledge.
Position the first tile at the center with the bottom touching the support ledge. Continue laying the tiles in a straight line until the row is finished. Go on to do the next row. Spacers should be used between tiles.
Remove the support ledge.
Tile the legs of the fireplace starting at the bottom and working your way up.
Remove the spacers.
Use a putty knife to clean up any thinset that is visible on tile.
Apply grout to joints of tile.
