How to Train a Teacup Yorkie
Teacup Yorkies are bred to be miniature sized. They still have the same characteristics of any Yorkie when it comes to personality and attitudes. These dogs will instinctively try to run the show. It is also in their nature to like to be in on family action and human contact. When Teacup Yorkies are raised in a healthy positive reinforced household, the process of how to train these tiny dogs is easier to accomplish.
- Begin developing a mutually satisfying relationship with your pet teacup Yorkie. The teacup is a miniature sized version of the breed. There are some simple guidelines to help an owner train a Teacup Yorkie.
- Be aware of the smaller size of the dog. Otherwise training should be the same for any Yorkie puppy. Training will ideally have already been started by a caring breeder. Older dogs can be trained, but it is advisable to begin house training at around 8 to 12 weeks of age. An older dog may need some formalized obedience training as this breed’s natural instinct is to do their own thing.
- Get to know your particular animal. Temperaments and personalities are different with each individual dog. It is best to work with the dog’s natural personality. These breeds respond very well in a positive healthy environment.
- Use crates to instill the idea of when to eliminate. These smaller dogs should not be kept in a crate for a long time as they have small bladders. All dogs like a personal space and the Yorkie breed does especially well with crate training. Dogs will naturally not want to dirty up the place where they sleep. Using a crate helps with the dog’s natural inclination to keep their private safe sleeping quarters clean.
- Give plenty of praise and tell your dog what you expect beforehand with simple command words and other training methods.
- Keep training fun, consistent and try to catch and praise the dog doing the right behavior.
