How to Transport a Canoe Using a Pickup Truck
Canoes are used for all sorts of outdoor recreation and are a favorite for getting around in small streams and rivers. Canoes may glide with ease in water but are not so easy to haul on dry land. Transporting a canoe in a pickup can be awkward at first but with this simple method hauling your canoe to your favorite fishing hole will be a breeze.
How to Transport a Canoe Using a Pickup Truck
Here are a few things you will need to haul a canoe.
- Ratchet Straps or Tie Downs
- Pillows or Towels (small size pillows work best)
- Red Flag
- A Buddy
You might need a buddy to help lift the canoe on top of the cab of the truck.
Steps
- Position pillows or folded towels on the cab of the truck so the canoe will be lying on the pillows. So the canoe doesn't scratch the cab of the truck.
- Lift the canoe and place it on top of the cab upside down (this is where a buddy can be handy).
- Make sure the canoe is setting on the pillows or towels.
- Position the canoe where each end of the canoe is located above the front and rear bumper.
- Attach the ratchets to the front bumper and the canoe then take up the slack in the ratchet strap.
- Repeat step five with the rear bumper.
- Once the slack is taken out of the ratchet straps you can tighten them securely to the truck.
- Tie the red flag to the end of the canoe at the rear of the truck in some states this is required.
