How to Transport a Car by Rail

Shipping vehicles by train is becoming more and more popular. First, it is less expensive than other shipping alternatives and this can really add up if you need to get your car across the country. Second, as we become more conscious of our energy usage, more people are realizing that trains are an energy-efficient means of shipping all kinds of things, including vehicles.

  1. Select either an auto rail car or an enclosed rail car to ship your vehicle. The auto rail car is an open rail car that is exposed to the elements, whereas the enclosed car is just that. There is typically an additional charge to ship your vehicle in an enclosed car. Depending on how far you are shipping your car, an enclosed rail car may be a better option in the long run for you.

  2. Contact several rail companies to obtain quotes for shipping your car. You will need to provide the company information, such as the dates you wish to ship your car and the locations from where and to where you will be shipping your car. Contacting multiple rail companies allows you to compare the pricing. Be sure to ask for a quote for both an enclosed car and a standard auto rail car. If there is not a huge difference, you may be able to ship your car via an enclosed car.

  3. Decide on a company and finalize the shipment information. Once you have the final information, determine when you need to have the car at the depot. Some rail companies may pick up the car for you, whereas others may require you to have the vehicle at the station by a certain date or time before the train is set to leave.
