How to Transport a Pet Bird

There are many reasons as to why you may wish to transport your pet bird. Whether you are taking the bird home from the pet store, moving, going on vacation or just taking it to the vet transporting your pet bird safely can be accomplished by following a few important rules.

  1. Plan ahead
when you are transporting your pet bird. It is essential that you
have all the supplies you will need to make the bird feel comfortable
while it is being transported. The bird can get very stressed when
it is being moved from place to place.

  2. Use a small
cardboard box for short trips. Be sure that the box is secure and
that there are hole punched into it for air. Buying a small pet
carrier is also an option, but if you are short on funds, the
cardboard box will do just fine. Do not worry about food or water
    for such a short trip.

  3. Use a travel
size cage for a long trip. Be sure everything in the cage is
securely fastened into place. Fill up the dishes with water and food
for the trip. Take a dark covering for the cage so you can eliminate
visual stimulation that may make the bird nervous. A nervous bird
may start flapping their wings and can injure itself.

  4. Bring extra
food and water in case the water and food inside the cage are
    spilled.

  5. Secure the
bird cage or cardboard box in a safe spot in your vehicle. It should
not move too much as the car moves. Secure it with seat belts or
place the box or cage on the floor rest. Do not place the cage or
box on the seat unsecured. Do not place the box or cage in the back
    of an SUV unsecured.
