How to Transport a Truck with a Truck
You can rent a car dolly from any local truck rental location. A car dolly will prevent extra mileage on your vehicle, saves on fuel and is one of the safest ways to transport a vehicle.
After renting a car dolly, also known as a tow dolly, make sure to read specific requirements on tow weight. If towing a rear wheel drive vehicle the drive shaft will have to be removed to protect from damage to the vehicle while being transported.
Steps on How to Attach a Tow Dolly
- Attach the dolly to a 2" required ball on the bumper of the truck doing the towing.
- Set the car dolly in the tilt position for loading.
- Before loading make certain the vehicle and the dolly are straight.
- Drive the vehicle onto the dolly until tires are against the wheel stops.
- Engage the parking brake and make certain the tires are centered.
- Center tie down winches and place the straps over the tires.
- Tighten the straps and the winch, place safety pin in winch when secured.
- Hook the vehicle safety chains to the vehicles frame.
- Disconnect the driveshaft if transporting a rear wheel vehicle.
- Release the towed vehicles parking brake and make sure the steering wheel is in the locked position.
Straps must be re-tightened after the first five miles and at every fuel up. Avoid situations that require backing up with the car dolly while towing the vehicle. If this happens the towed vehicle and the car dolly will have to be unloaded before going in reverse.
