How to Treat Colds
For most people, colds are an inevitable and uncomfortable occurrence. Because there is no current cure for the common cold, you should take every precaution to avoid getting sick, such as washing your hands frequently. In the event that you do come down with a cold the best way to quickly get over it is to know how to treat it.
- Get your rest. This allows your body to focus its energy on fighting off the cold.
- Drink plenty of hot liquids. The liquids will help to prevent dehydration, calm coughing and sooth a sore, inflamed throat.
- Mix a teaspoon of salt into a cup of warm water. If you have a sore throat, gargle with the solution four times a day.
- Take over-the-counter medications that are for your specific symptoms.
- Stop smoking while you have a cold, particularly if you have a persistent cough. If you are unable to stop smoking completely, cut down on the number of cigarettes that you do smoke.
- See your doctor if you have a persistent cough, a sore throat that lasts longer than 48 hours or headache.
