How to Treat Menopause

Menopause is the time in every woman's life, usually around age 50, where the cycle of ovulation and menstruation ends. Since a woman's body is undergoing hormonal changes, she will experience symptoms like mood swings, hot flashes and trouble sleeping. Treating these symptoms can help women get relief for the duration of menopause.

  • Talk to your doctor about menopausal hormonal treatments. These treatments can help bring your hormones to a balanced level and reduce many of the typical symptoms of menopause. This therapy option is not the best choice for all women and has come under fire in recent years, so talk to your doctor about your specific situation and determine with him if this treatment is right for you.

  • Solve sleeping problems by adjusting your lifestyle to promote good sleeping habits. Work out daily, as this will help burn extra energy that would otherwise keep you up at night. Establish a night time routine where you perform activities that make you sleepy, like taking a bath, reading a book and taking time to relax. Avoid taking long naps and limit your caffeine intake, as both could keep you up at night.

  • Adjust your daily schedule to prevent mood swings. Simply getting ample amounts of sleep and keeping to a regular schedule will help you feel rested and help balance your moods. Bring severe mood swings or depression to your doctor's attention. He may recommend therapy or depression medication.

  • Manage hot flashes by avoiding alcohol, spicy foods, stressful situations and hot and humid places. Sleep with a fan on and keep a fan at your desk at work. Dress in layers, so you can remove layers any time your temperature rises.
