How to Treat Mold on Leather

Mold can often form on leather because it is a natural material, and will retain moisture. Therefore, if leather is allowed to become moist and then not properly ventilated, it can easily allow mold to grow. Do not worry; you can treat the mold on your leather without ruining the leather by using all-natural products.

  1. Take the leather that you are going to treat outside into an area that receives direct sunlight. The UV rays of the sun are able to kill the mold spores so it is best to allow the leather to dry in the sun after cleaning.

  2. Put on protective gear such as a respiratory mask and rubber gloves to protect yourself from the mold spores that you are going to be working with.

  3. Mix a cleaning solution that consists of 4 cups of water and 1 cup of vinegar to effectively treat and remove the mold without damaging the delicate leather surface.

  4. Wipe down the affected area using a clean towel and the vinegar solution that you have previously prepared.

  5. Scrub down the area thoroughly with a soft bristled toothbrush and the vinegar cleaning solution once the mold has been removed. This will allow the vinegar to get down into the grain of the leather and remove any remaining mold spores that may be present.

  6. Allow the cleaned leather to sit in the sun until it is thoroughly dried out.

  7. Apply a thin coat of a leather protectant and conditioner to the entire surface of the leather to protect it from developing mold on the surface in the future. You can purchase a leather protectant and conditioner and most home improvement stores.
