How to Treat Scalp Psoriasis Naturally

Psoriasis that affects the scalp is also called seborrheic psoriasis. The condition can resemble severe dandruff as patches of thick, flaky skin can extend to the forehead below the hairline. Psoriasis of the scalp can be very uncomfortable and demoralizing, though it is not caused by poor personal hygiene.

  • Shampoo three times a week. Because of the embarrassing effect the condition can have on those who have it, the tendency is to want to shampoo the hair every day. This can actually exacerbate the issue and cause the condition to worsen. Only wash your hair three times a week. Any more than this will strip out the natural and protective oils produced by your scalp and cause your condition to worsen.

  • Be gentle. Always treat your scalp as gently as possible. Do not over comb or apply excessive pressure to the scalp when brushing in an attempt to be rid of flakes. This can actually tear the scalp and cause bleeding.

  • Color wisely. You may dye or perm your hair, provided that the skin on your scalp is not damaged or broken open. Do not attempt to apply colorant on a scalp with open sores or spots as you will damage the scalp and worsen your condition.

  • Shampoo with tar-based shampoo. Tar-based shampoos are often used in dandruff control, but many of them have also been proven to help with psoriasis of the scalp. There are also scalp steroids and tar preparations that you may try with the approval from your doctor.

  • Condition the skin, not just the hair. Massage a little jojoba or coconut oil gently into your scalp before going to bed every second night. This allows plenty of time for the oil to soak into the skin and condition the area. Use an old towel or shirt to cover your head at night if you worry about excess oil. Wash the oil out with a dry hair specific shampoo, preferably in cream form.
