In an adolescent, common mental health issues are bipolar disorder, ADHD and depression. There are ways that have been proven to treat as well as prevent mental health problems in adolescents.

Treating mental issues should start by seeking assistance from a family doctor. A family physician may refer the adolescent to a psychologist or counselor with expertise is in children's mental health issues.

  1. Schedule an appointment with a counselor that specializes in teen and adolescent mental issues. Be sure to accompany your teen to their appointment.

  2. Follow through with the entire treatment plan requested by the psychologist. This may include family counseling sessions and making sure that your teenager is taking any prescribed medicines.

  3. Help the adolescent to engage in social activities and other support groups.

  4. Inform the child’s school guidance counselor and teachers so they are aware of the mental health issues.

  5. Provide lots of emotional support.

Maintaining an open relationship with the children within the family can prevent some mental health issues from ever starting.
