How to Troubleshoot Car Repair Problems

The only way to fix a car is to know what is wrong with it. Diagnosing your car can help you narrow down the many problems based on visual observations and symptoms the car shows. Once you have narrowed down the problems, you can get a good idea of possible solutions to fix the car.

  1. Check the dashboard for any warning lights. These are the first signs that something is wrong with the car and most cars will always have a warning light. The light can warn you of the problems with the engine such as motor and oil sensor lights.

  2. Look over the engine. Check the battery and make sure there is no corrosion on the terminals, which can cause the car to fail. Make sure liquid has not spewed over the engine compartment. Look for disconnected wires that can cause problems also.

  3. Open the fuse box and check for fuses that may need replacing. This is a small problem that can be fixed quite easily. Blown fuses will keep a car from running properly. Check your car manual to help you locate the fuse box and fuses.

  4. Purchase a car code reader from your local auto supply store. These electronic devices will give you codes that inform you of problems with the computer in the car. You can also request this service at no charge at your auto supply store.

  5. Online diagnostic flow charts can also help you diagnose problems when you answer questions. The charts can help with diagnosing starter, engine, brakes and overheating problems.
