How to Troubleshoot Computer Systems
Many people and businesses depend on personal computers for many essential day-to-day functions. PC’s are so integral that any down time can cause problems and disruptions for the owners. Yet many do not know the simplest computer system troubleshooting steps.
- Always remember to back-up your data on a regular basis, and especially before altering any hardware or software for your computer.
- Any time you open the computer's case, make sure that the machine is unplugged, and that you are grounded to prevent static charges to sensitive electronic equipment which can render it useless.
- If the computer does not power-on, make sure that it is plugged in to an outlet and that the power button has been engaged. If the machine will not turn on, the power supply may need replaced.
- Make sure to update all software and software drivers.
- Update virus protection software and run a full system scan.
- For issues involving starting the system: The computer will not boot in to the operating system. Often, the problem can be found using BIOS. Press Esc at system start to load the BIOS console.
- For issues involving software errors: Remove the software and reinstall.
- If the computer does not show an image: Make sure that the monitor is turned on. Otherwise, the video graphics card might be defective.
- A continuous clicking sound coming from the computer, a blue screen with error messages, or continuous re-booting, may indicate an issue with the computer's hard drive. Either there is some sort of physical damage or a bad virus has found its way into the system.
- Make sure that the devices such as video card, sound card, mouse, Internet cards, etc. are recognized by the computer. This can be accomplished on most modern Windows-based systems by clicking the “Start” button and selecting the “Devices and Printers option.”
- Reformatting: If a virus is suspected, or the operating system's registry is too corrupted, then this may be they best option. You will be offered the option at the start of the system when you press the “Escape” key.
- Re-installation: Retrieve your back-up discs and copy of the computer's operating system. Use the operating system disks first. Make sure to install all drivers for hardware components. Then re-install software and other data.
