How to Turn Screen Doors Into Pet Doors

During a busy day, it may be hard to find the time to let your pet out in the backyard. This can be a very bad thing and can lead to your pet having accidents in the house. Fortunately, adding a pet door to your screen door is an easy way to let your pet be in charge of their own needs.

What You Will Need:

  • Utility Knife

  • Snap-in pet door

  1. Purchase the proper sized snap-in pet door for the size of your pet. Check your local hardware store for a variety of sizes and designs.

  2. Check your current screen door for any damages. Should there be any damages, repair your current door or install a new one. The door must be in good condition before you install your new pet door.

  3. On the outside of the screen door, position the outer half of the pet door where you would like it to be installed. Most pet doors are placed close to the bottom of the screen door and either in the center of the door or near the door handle.

  4. Using your utility knife, cut small “X” shapes on the inside of the screen door at each of the snap-in’s posts. The posts of the snap-in door should slide through the cuts and let you press the door into the screen.

  5. Position the portion of the pet door which goes inside over the posts and connect the two halves together until they snap together tightly.

  6. Cut the screen door on the inside of the screen door to allow the pet to go through. If you have a metal screen door cut the metal before connecting the snap-in pet door to prevent any injuries from happening to your pet.
