How to Turn a Crochet Chain

Many beautiful pieces of handmade art can be created through crocheting. It is not difficult to learn to crochet, and the chain stitch is the easiest to accomplish. You must make the chain stitch before you can complete any other part of your project.

You will be crocheting from right to left, if you are right-handed. If you are left-handed, you will crochet left to right.

  1. Begin a chain stitch by creating a slip knot. Bring each successive strand of yarn around the notched end of the crochet hook and slide it in the direction of the knot. A chain of yarn is formed. Crochet about ten chain stitches to get started.

  2. After completing these stitches, turn your project completely over and place the hook back inside the loop. Make your turning chain according to the stitch you are using. Here are several examples:

  • Single crochet stitch. Add one chain stitch and remove the hook. Turn the piece over, then insert the hook back in first stitch.

  • Half double crochet. Add two chain stitches and remove the hook. Turn the piece over and then insert the hook in the second stitch of row.

  • Double crochet. Add three chain stitches and remove the hook. Turn the piece over and then insert the hook in the second stitch of row.

  • Triple crochet. Add four chain stitches and remove the hook. Turn the piece over and then insert the hook in the second stitch of row.

Many different crochet projects can be created from these few basic stitches, including such items as afghans, sweaters, blankets and Christmas tree ornaments.
