How to Turn a Hobby Into a Business
Turning a hobby into a business is an ideal way to combine passion with profession. With a bit of thought, research and planning, your recreational activity can become a lucrative opportunity. Assess needs related to your hobby, ease into charging for your product or service, and map out a long-term plan for making a living.
1. Evaluate your relationship with your hobby. Some hobbies are only fun when they are recreational. Once you impose deadlines and pressure, you might find that you enjoyed your hobby more when it was not tied to making a living. Spend more time on your hobby. Start out slowly by charging for your product or service to determine whether or not turning your hobby into a full-time activity could take all the goodness out of it.
2. Research opportunities related to your hobby. For example, if you work out daily and want to train others to do the same, explore opportunities to become a personal trainer. If your hobby is writing your thoughts and reflections, research opportunities related to writing.
3. Find a mentor. Search for someone who has done exactly what you are planning to do and ask for advice. Ask your mentor what steps need to be taken to turn the hobby into a money-making opportunity.
4. Create a business plan. Turning a fun activity into a business venture requires planning. Working out on your own is one thing, but becoming a personal trainer for others will require classes and certification. Create a plan for what classes, training, or resources required prior to establishing a business. In addition, map out the steps to take to start the business, fund it and market it.
5. Ease into the transition. For example, if you are going to make and sell greeting cards, start by visiting greeting card stores to assess their interest in your cards. Establish one or two clients at the beginning to determine how quickly you can produce the cards and meet clients' needs.
6. Hire help. Once your business grows, you may need to hire others to assist. Find assistants who are just as interested in your hobby to help maintain a positive business.
