How to Turn in Ideas to a Producer
Producers are often self-motivated individuals who have the final responsibility for all aspects of a film's or television show's production. The producer is usually the first person to become involved in a project. They participate in all the main producing phases and then see the project through all phases of production.
The Producer's role is to turn your creative story ideas into profitable entertainment, and to persuade others to share in his or her commercial and innovative vision.
Producers are extremely busy and don't accept ideas from anyone who submits them. However, there are a few steps you can take to have a better chance at a producer seeing your idea.
- If at all possible, get an agent. Some producers will only see ideas and scripts that have agent representation. They believe that agents may have already done some of the screening process for them. Additionally, they can help by focusing on those people and companies that specialize in producing exactly the kind of idea you've generated.
- Enter your idea into a contest. Contests are one major way that producers and movie houses look for fresh ideas and talent.
- Approach producers on your own in the hopes that they are taking submissions from screenwriters. Call production companies and ask if they are taking submissions, and then make an appointment to meet with a producer to pitch your idea.
- Attend film festivals, go to independent movie screenings and meet people within the industry. Get to know professionals who can pass your name along to a reputable producer. In other words, network and use all of your contacts with connections.
The "pitch" refers to what you will tell a potential buyer about your project to make them interested enough to buy it.
- Your pitch should be short, no more than 10 or 15 minutes, and have enough information to clearly explain your idea while also getting your listener fired up about the concept.
- You will also want to come up with a short 2 minute "elevator pitch," just in case you find yourself in an elevator with the right person to hear your ideas.
