How to Type Up a Spousal Support Agreement

If you and your spouse decide that you need to separate or get a divorce it is best to try and come to an agreement about spousal support. If you are able to do this you will find it very beneficial in the future.

  • State the full names of the husband and wife in the beginning. Later they can be referred to as the “husband” and the “wife” if you choose to do so. Additionally, be sure to include the current address of each, the place of marriage and the date the divorce was filed if it is applicable at the time.

  • List all of the income that each party has coming in and also include the reasoning behind who is paying what and why the other person is receiving the amount they are receiving.

  • Set specific guidelines that must be in place for the person who will be receiving the spousal support to continue receiving it. Also, be sure to include how often the person will be receiving the spousal support and how often it will be paid.

  • Review and proofread the spousal support agreement to make sure that there are no errors and to make sure that nothing has been left out.

  • Include a section that states that both parties understand the terms so there will be no confusion in the future.

  • Go to a place where witnesses can see both parties sign the agreement. Have the agreement notarized if necessary.

  • File the agreement as necessary.
