How to Unclog Drains Without Chemicals
Most of the time when people find that they have a clogged drain in one of their sinks, they immediately turn to chemical cleaners to clear the block. However, there are a couple simple household items that you can try first. Not only are these items probably already in your house, they are also environmentally safe.
You Will Need:
- Baking Soda
- Vinegar
This should be done when you will not be home for a few hours, such as before you leave for work.
- Remove the drain cover, if possible. This will make it easier to get to the blockage. Remove as much water from the sink as possible.
- Pour a half-cup of baking soda directly down the drain. Follow with a half-cup of vinegar. The combination of vinegar and baking soda will begin to foam and fume. This is what causes the blockage to break up.
- Replace the drain cover and stay out of the area as much as possible. The mixture will need to sit for about three hours.
- Once the mixture has had time to work, flush the drain with water.
Tips and Warnings:
- While this non-chemical mixture may work for smaller clogs, bigger clogs may require the use of a more abrasive drain opener.
- For extreme clogs, consult with a professional plumber to see what the best way to remove it would be. In some cases, you may not be able to remove the blockage yourself.
