How to Unclog the Kitchen Sink and Pipes
Kitchen sinks commonly get slowed down due to drains and clogs. A slow drain is much easier to work with than a clog. It's important to attend to any drain problems as soon as possible. As time goes by, sludge can harden. Once it has hardened in the pipes, it's almost impossible to clear. Hot water helps to loosen clogs up.
Kitchen sinks become clogged due to grease and food particles. Sometimes you will become aware that a clog is forming due to a slow drain down your sink. If an object was inserted into your drain, the clog will be immediate. It's much easier to clear a slow drain and small clog than one completely closing your pipe.
Items Needed
- Plunger
- Chemical drain cleaner (optional)
- Sink auger (optional)
- Large bucket
- Gloves
- Eye goggles
- Dry towels (optional)
Instructions
- Using your plunger, plunge your sink drain for about five minutes. If necessary, run a bit of hot water down the drain first. Plungers generally work pretty quick. If it hasn't unclogged your pipes within five minutes, you will need to do something else.
- Try a chemical drain cleaners. Most of these advertise results within 15 minutes. If possible, let it sit overnight. You will want to use a cleaner that is safe for your pipes.
- After your drain cleaner has sat for the recommended time, run hot water down your drain. If your clog resulted from food or debris, more than likely the drain cleaner will resolve your problem.
- If you are still experiencing a clog, you will have to use a sink auger. A sink auger is commonly called a snake. Before beginning, let the chemical drain cleaner completely clear out of your drain. It might take overnight for this to slowly drip past the clog in your line. If time is of the essence, call a plumber. You can also put a large bucket underneath the sink trap and drain it out. Should you decide to do this, make sure to wear protective eye wear and gloves.
- Sometimes the clog is simply in the trap. Unscrew the U pipe underneath your sink and empty it out. If this takes care of the problem, screw it back on.
- If the clog is further down the line, you will want to snake the pipe extending out of your wall. Following the manufacturer's instructions, insert the snake into the pipe until you get to the obstruction. Secure and start snaking. Snake until you feel the obstruction break loose. It helps to pull the snake out periodically and clean the end off.
- After you have cleared your clog, replace your pipes and run hot water down the drain to finish clearing it out.
