How to Understand Motorcycle Tire Sizes
If you own a motorcycle, you should educate yourself on the way that motorcycle tires are sized so that you can make an informed purchase when looking to buy new tires for your motorcycle. There are a series of letters or numbers that represent different aspects of a motorcycle tire.
- The first number in a series of numbers and letters on a motorcycle tire represents the width of the tire in millimeters or inches; however, finding this number in inches is rare. It is usually measured in millimeters.
- The second number in the series of letters and numbers stands for the height aspect ratio. This is the number that represents the percentage of the height compared to the width of the tire in millimeters. This number is given in a percentage such as 40, 50 or 60 percent.
- The construction code of the tire is usually one or two letters and comes directly after the height-to-width aspect ratio.
- The next number in the series represents the rim size of the motorcycle. This number is always given in inches and is easily determined by measuring the size of your rim or by checking the owner’s manual that you received when you purchased your motorcycle.
- Most motorcycle tires are marked with an M/C at either the beginning or end of the tire code. This information is stamped onto the inner rim of the tire.
- If you are unsure as to what size tire your motorcycle needs, you should consult your owner’s manual or a local service shop to determine the proper size of tire to buy for your motorcycle.
