How to Update a Graphics Card
Like all other components inside a computer, eventually graphics cards will break and need to be replaced. Before you resort to spending the money buy a new one, simply updating your card may achieve the results you're looking for. The way to do that is to update its driver software.
- Identify what kind of graphics card you have. This information is usually found in your user's manual. If not, you can find out by checking your device manager. In Windows you can find out what graphics card you have by looking it up in the Device Manager. On the Macintosh you can investigate this through the System Profiler.
- Visit the graphics card maker's website. Locate the latest updated driver software for your card and download it.
- Completely remove all files associated with your old graphics driver software from the system and reboot your computer. You should have nothing but basic graphics abilities and a very low resolution screen when you finish rebooting. This is a sign that your old driver software is completely gone.
- Install your new graphics driver software. You may need to reboot again.
