How to Upgrade Desktop Computer Memory
Computer memory is required for optimizing the computers performance. The memory is information stored in cells for access when needed. Upgrading the memory of a desktop computer is possible with just a small amount of computer knowledge and a few tools that are found in most homes.
- Visit the Crucial.Com website to find out the type of memory needed for the desktop model.
- Enter the manufacturer name, product line name, and the model number of the computer. Click “Find It” button and the website will provide you with a list of possible memory upgrades for the computer.
- Purchase the correct memory upgrade from a local retail store or online computer store. The memory card must match the size and type that is included in the computer already.
- If adding a 2GB memory card to a desktop computer that currently has a 1GB memory card, you will have to remove the 1GB card and either replace with a 2GB or leave the slot empty.
- Unplug the desktop computer and remove the cover on the side panel.
- The memory card is found in a slot on the motherboard. The desktop will have two or four memory slots depending on the model.
- Use an anti-static wrist band when removing the memory card from the plastic packaging.
- Hold the memory card on the outer edges because it may become damaged if held on the circuitry.
- Slide the memory card into the free memory card slot and then gently push down on the card until you hear the locking arms secure the card.
- Return the cover to the side panel and plug the computer in to the outlet.
- Boot the computer on and check to ensure the memory is registering correctly. Click “Start” and right-click on “My Computer” go down to “Properties” and select. This will display the properties of the computer.
