How to Upgrade My Video Driver
Device drivers are software programs that allow other computer programs and applications to correctly interpret information provided by a computer's hardware devices. A video driver is mostly responsible for a computer's ability to display media by interfacing with a video card.
- Find out what type of video card your computer currently has installed. There are several ways of doing this, but the simplest way is to select control panel from your computer's "Start" menu, access the "System" file, clicking on the "Hardware" tab, select "Device Manager", and finally click on "Display Adapters". The following steps will go a bit faster if you write the name of your video card on a sheet of paper.
- Navigate to the manufacturer who produces your video card's website. You will then be presented with the option to select your video card and view the latest drivers available for the hardware.
- Determine whether or not your current video driver is up-to-date. Many people find that their computer has automatically updated the driver as a part of a regular maintenance process. Most manufacturers offer an application that will scan your current software to see if there is a new video driver available for your video card.
- Choose to download and install the new driver if there is a more modern video driver available for your video card. Follow the instructions provided to successfully download and install your new software.
- Restart your computer to complete the process.
