How to Upgrade Tires and Wheels

You don’t have to spend a ton of money to customize a car. An easy and inexpensive way to customize a car is to upgrade the tires and wheels.  As long as the right tires and wheels are chosen, upgrading the car’s tires and wheels can increase the value of the car and make a noticeable and immediate difference.

  1. Assess the size of the current tires. Look at the tire wall near the rim to get the specific size dimensions of the tire. Determine the size that you want the upgraded tires to be. Making the car tire more than one inch larger than the car's conventional tire size could result in the tire rubbing against the car body which will limit the vehicles performance. Be realistic with the sizing.

  2. Price and compare prices for a new set of wheels and rims. The rims are an important part of the wheel. They provide the base and housing for the tire as well as the connection points that will secure the whole fixture to the car. Rims come in a variety of artistic forms and fashions from different manufacturers. The higher scales of rims are usually coated in chrome. Ensure that the rims are available in the proper size and have the same number of lug holes to accommodate the car.

  3. Choose and buy the new set of tires and rims. Consider the surface you will be driving on and the tread on the tire. Some tread patterns have an advantage on particular road surfaces and the tread should complement the rim.

  4. Mount the new tires onto the new rims. If the tires and rims are special ordered they will come pre-mounted and balanced for you. This is an advantage to ordering your rims and tires. Jack up the vehicle and remove the old wheels and tires and replace them with the upgraded ones. Lower the jack and reposition it to the next tire repeating the steps above until all wheels and tires have been changed.
