How to Use Alternative Remedies to Cure Glaucoma

When fluid pressures in the eye increase beyond normal limits, it can affect the optic nerve. This results in a medical condition, called glaucoma. Left untreated, glaucoma can result in vision loss. While surgery is an option, it is not without risk, so many patients opt to try alternative remedies to cure glaucoma first.

Bilberry

Bilberry has long been prized as a treatment for vision problems. During World War II, Royal Air Force fighters would eat bilberry jam just prior to their nighttime flights, to improve their vision. Research has shown that bilberry is an effective treatment for improving vision in those with glaucoma.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C, found in citrus fruits, is another option for treating vision problems. For glaucoma patients, it can lower intraocular eye pressure. Adding more citrus to your diet is one to take advantage of this remedy, but you can also take a supplement containing 2,000 mg of Vitamin C daily to benefit.

Fennel

A 2008 study concluded that fennel may be effective at reducing eye pressure. More research is needed to fully understand the exact mechanism, but it shows promise as a natural remedy for glaucoma. Eating a daily salad made of fennel or making a mild fennel tea to use as a daily eyewash is the recommended use.

Vitamin E

Quite simply, vitamin E works to remove particles from the eye. The recommended dose is 1,000 mg daily. This may be increased to a maximum of 3,000 mg daily, if needed for full effectiveness.

Rutin

Rutin is a bioflavonoid. In addition to reducing intraocular pressure, it can also be effective at treating any pain that comes from glaucoma. Take 50 mg three times a day as an alternative medicine for glaucoma.

Punarnava

Punarnava is an Ayurdevic herb that has been used for vision problems. A tea can be made by adding a teaspoon of the herb to a cup of hot water, steeping and straining the mixture. The tea can help reduce pressures in the eye, relieving glaucoma symptoms. For maximum effectiveness, avoid dairy products and caffeine when taking the tea.
