How to Use Enzyme Cleaners

Enzyme cleaners, or digesters, are a type of cleaner made of enzymes that eats up organic stains and matter. They are commonly used for cleaning stains and odor, such as pet urine, from carpeting. They are also available for laundering and are helpful in the removal of grass, blood and sweat. The key to removing stains with this type of cleaning product is to understand how to use it properly.

What You'll Need:

  • Towels

  • Plastic covering

Carpet Stains

  1. Read the directions on the enzyme cleaner packaging to determine how to mix it for use on carpeting.

  2. Wipe up any spills that may be on the carpet using paper towels or an old white towel. Remove as much of the liquid as possible by blotting only.

  3. Pour the enzyme cleaner over the stain in the carpeting. The solution should thoroughly saturate the carpet into the padding.

  4. Place plastic over the stained area. This will help it to remain wet while the cleaner is working on the stain. If you do not have plastic to cover the stain, use a damp towel in its place.

  5. Let the area set for the amount of time instructed on the packaging. Remove the plastic or towel.

  6. Rinse the area thoroughly with plain water.

Laundry Stains

  1. Check the material that your stained clothing is made of. If it is made of animal fibers, such as wool for example, do not soak your clothes in the enzyme cleaner as it may eat the fibers.

  2. Add warm water to your washing machine for organic stains in clothing made of non-animal fibers other than blood. If the stain that you are removing is blood, add cool water instead of warm.

  3. Read the directions on your specific brand of enzyme cleaner to determine how much to add to your washing machine.

  4. Let the clothing soak for the instructed amount of time.
