How to Use Google to Find Jobs for Employment
Whether you are an entry-level job seeker or a veteran, looking for a job on the internet can be overwhelming. When using a search engine like Google, there are various results that come up, and selecting the right one can be a difficult choice. With a few tips and selective searching, you can use Google to your benefit when looking for a job.
- Be smart when searching. Take an exact phrase and type it into the Google search box. For example, typing “jobs in New York,” will render all search results with the exact phrase. Google usually tries to provide the top most relevant results. The further through the results pages, the less likely it's what you are searching for.
- Exclude certain search results by typing a “-“ sign before the search term. By typing this sign, Google will recognize not to include any sites that have this search term.
- Create a Google account. This is beneficial because then you are able to search through your older Google searches. Once you have created an account, enable the "Google Web History" option in your preferences. It will remember your history and any links you have clicked.
- Head over to base.google.com. This is another section of Google dedicated to job postings. Type in your zip code and list job functions you want and Google will find any relevant results.
- Type in the specific company name along with the keyword “careers” if that is what you are searching. Google often gives the company’s career page as the first result, allowing you to spend less time navigating the company’s website.
- Google your name to see what results come up. Some companies, upon receiving your resume, type your name into Google to see what comes up. Make any social profiles private if you don't want them accessed by potential employers.
- Be creative. Some companies may have the exact position you want. It never hurts to type it in.
- Take breaks in between searching. The more hours you spend looking at results, the more overwhelming it becomes.
