How Does Earwax Form?

How to Use Hydrogen Peroxide for Ear Wax Removal

Extra heavy secretions of ear wax can be aggravating and not to mention the affects to your hearing and natural balance. The local drugstore or grocery store usually carries plenty of products for wax removal, but you can remedy the situation on your own if you learn how to use hydrogen peroxide for earwax removal. Peroxide is inexpensive, but the odds are there is some in your bathroom cabinet already.

Things You'll Need:

  • Paper towel

  • Eyedropper

  • Cotton swabs

  • Hydrogen peroxide

  1. Set aside at least 30 minutes to clean out the wax from your ear. You will also need a place like a comfortable bed when draining out the wax.

  2. Locate or purchase an eyedropper if you do not have one. If you are reusing an old dropper, run it under tap water in the sink and clean it with antibacterial dish soap. Put a little hydrogen peroxide into a small bowl and fill the eyedropper.

  3. Get on a bed and lie comfortably on your side. Take the eyedropper and squeeze the medication into your ear that is affected. When the hydrogen peroxide winds its way into your ear canal, you may feel an odd type of tingling in your ear. The combination of hydrogen peroxide and earwax creates tiny liquid bubbles inside your ear. There is no cause for alarm; this is an indication that the peroxide is doing what it is suppose to.

  4. Lie still for a minimum of 20 minutes on your side. You have to allow time for the peroxide to do its job of loosening the wax. Apply a paper towel over your ear and turn over to let the liquid in your ear drain onto the towel. It may take up to 10 minutes for it to empty out. Clean up the outside area of your ear using a cotton swab. Do not stick the cotton swab into your ear canal.

  5. Determine if further treatments of peroxide are necessary and repeat the process if needed. Sometimes it may take a couple of treatments when you have heavy earwax buildup. If this process causes pain inside your ear it may be necessary to see a physician.
