How to Use Peroxide for Mold Removal

Mold removal is the first thing that comes to mind when you see mold. You can choose to purchase expensive materials to remove mold, or choose to use hydrogen peroxide instead. Hydrogen peroxide long known for its treatment of wounds does an effective job in removing mold from a vast array of materials such as wood and clothing.

Materials

  • Hydrogen peroxide

  • Brush

  • Spray bottle

  • Laundry detergent

  • Soft clean rag

  • Paper towels

  • Sponge

  1. Gather all the supplies you need. Purchase any items that you may not have readily available. You can find most items at your local grocery store or any large retailer.

  2. Get the spray bottle, add the hydrogen peroxide and add sufficient water to dilute the hydrogen peroxide approximately three times the amount of the hydrogen peroxide should be sufficient. Adding the water is important because the chemical found in the peroxide can bleach the object if used in its raw state.

  3. Spray the shower or tile area and take a firm-bristled brush and scrub to remove the mold and mildew. Let the solution sit on the object for at least 10 minutes then add warm water to rinse the solution off. Dry the affected area using either a paper towel or a clean rag. Wipe the area with vinegar if you notice any mineral deposits.

  4. Mist wood materials with the spray solution. Do not soak the wood surface because this could damage the wood material. Use a nonabrasive sponge and scrub the affected area and let it sit for approximately 10 minutes after scrubbing. Follow with a warm water rinse and dry the object with direct sun or use a blow dryer.

  5. Remove mildew from clothing by using a 1/2 cup of hydrogen peroxide along with a cup of detergent combine together. Set the washing machine on the hot setting and wash and dry as normal. This should remove any mildew on the clothing, but make sure you read the clothing manufacturers label to make sure this is acceptable.
