How to Use Septic Tank Cleaner

Septic tanks are the large tanks used to hold wastewater. Although it's recommended to get them pumped every five years, many septic tanks run into problems before then. By using a septic tank cleaner, you will extend the life of your tank. Cleaners help the solid material to break down faster, allowing the liquid to drain into your drainfield freely.

Septic tanks are big concrete or steel tanks buried in your yard. They hold waste water from your home. The solid material eventually settles down to the bottom of the tank. This is known as the sludge layer. The liquid goes out of a drainage pipe on the opposite side it came in on.

Septic tanks hold more than just waste. They also hold toilet paper, grease, soap, dishwashing liquid, tampons, and more. Bacteria breaks down the waste material in your septic tank. It requires quite a bit of natural bacteria and enzymes to break all this down.

It's recommended that you have your septic emptied every five years. Sometimes though people run into problems before this time. This is due to the solids not breaking down fast enough. By using a septic tank cleaner, you will be increasing the life of your septic tank. It breaks waste material faster.

There are two types of septic tank cleaners. Chemical cleaners are generally not recommended. They kill the bacteria that helps to break down waste material. Chemicals also hurt the soil structure as it's released back into the ground, and it damages your septic tank.

The best septic tank cleaner is an enzyme additive. Although each cleaner is different, they basically contain live organisms, bacteria, and enzymes that break down toilet paper and solid material. This recreates the natural process and does not damage the soil around your drain field.

Using a product like Rid-X will keep the bacteria population high, therefore breaking down the waste in your septic even faster. These products are offered in a powder or liquid form. Depending on the product you choose, you may use your it once a month or once every three months.

To use, simply pour down the toilet and flush. It's best to use your cleaner before you go to bed or work, allowing the product to work while you are gone. Some septic tank cleaners can be poured down the drain, followed by hot water. Make sure to read the directions for use thoroughly before using.
