How to Use Synthetic Oil for Engine Break-In

Synthetic oil offers many benefits over non-synthetic oil. Many automobile manufacturers routinely use synthetic oil when producing and shipping new automobiles. Using synthetic oil for engine break-in while your car is still new is an easy way to break your engine in gently.

Things You Will Need:

  • Vehicle owner's manual

  1. Examine your vehicle's owner's manual. Many owner's manuals will specify whether synthetic or non-synthetic oil should be used for engine break-in. If your owner's manual expressly advises against using a synthetic oil, you should follow their suggestions and use a non-synthetic oil during break-in. Using a synthetic oil when it is not recommended by the auto manufacturer can cause engine troubles for your new vehicle.

  2. Review the manufacturer's oil recommendations. If the manufacturer recommends using a synthetic oil during engine break-in, consult the manual for further recommendations. Most owner's manuals will recommend a specific brand of synthetic oil for the vehicle.

  3. Make an appointment for an oil change. It is in your best interest to schedule the oil change at the dealership where you purchased the vehicle. This can be helpful if issues with the vehicle's warranty arise in the future. It is a good idea to have all maintenance performed by the specified dealership. If possible, request that the car's oil be changed prior to taking delivery of your new vehicle.

  4. Follow the mechanic's recommendation when choosing a particular brand of synthetic engine oil.

  5. Attend the oil change appointment and ensure that the vehicle's oil is changed to a synthetic oil.
