How to Use Taxis

When you consider you are getting into a taxi with a stranger in what may be an unfamiliar city, it is a good idea to know what you are doing. Most taxi drivers are honest, but there are a few that will take the longer way around to charge up the mileage. Learn a couple more handy tips on how to use taxis to avoid confusion and embarrassment.

Flagging a Taxi

Learn how to get a taxi. If you do not call a taxi company to pick you up, then you will be trying to find one on the street. Getting a taxi at an airport is generally no problem as they are almost always lined up right in front, but it works a little different on the city streets.

Stand on the sidewalk and look for taxis or locate a taxi stand. Once you spot a cab figure out if it is already carrying passengers or it if available for hire. Check the flag found on each cab. A flag that is down means the taxi is already full. At night you can tell if the taxi is available when the light on top of the taxi is lit.

Flag down an empty taxi from the sidewalk by waving your hand and yelling "taxi."

Stating Your Destination

Tell the taxi driver in the clearest method possible where you would like to be driven. Using specifics makes it easier for the driver and prevents mistakes. Preferably give the driver a complete address or business name with street names.

Stops

Inform taxi drivers ahead of time whether you need them to wait after making a stop. This helps taxi dispatchers establish waiting times for the next customers.

Charges

Read pricing information posted in the cab so you clearly understand the rates and charges. In some countries it is not unusual to negotiate prices, but in the U.S. prices are usually determined by the meter reading.

Ask the driver whether tipping is proper. In most cases tipping is a good idea especially if the driver was kind enough to offer information about the city or places to go sightseeing.

Payment

Pay the driver at your destination and retrieve any luggage in the cab or the trunk.
