How to Use Your Home Computer With Online Storage

Online storage has become one of the most trusted ways for computer users to keep their documents, pictures, and music safe. Consumers can feel peace of mind knowing that their files are backed up on servers away from their home computer. But, they must understand how to send and access these files for online storage to be a help.

There are many different online storage companies on the market today, such as Carbonite and Mozy. These steps may vary depending on which company you decide to use. However, there are some similarities no matter what type of online storage company you choose.

  1. Find out how files are sent from your computer to the company. There are two methods. The first is automatic storage. This takes place when your computer automatically backs itself up to the company's servers. This can take place at timed intervals of your choosing.

  2. Back up your system manually if your company does not back up files automatically. This means that you choose which files go to the online storage company and when exactly the transfer will take place. Although this method gives you more control, it can also be more time consuming.

  3. Access your stored files as needed. At some point you will want to access the files that you have placed online. Many companies have programs that install to your computer. These programs can help you easily transfer files from online storage back to your hard drive for access.

  4. If your company does not have a program that installs directly to your hard drive, go directly to the company website and follow its directions to download the files back to your hard drive.
