How to Use a Cab Safely
Although cabs are a common form of transportation, it is important to express a certain amount of caution when using one. Because crime can occur just about anywhere, it isn't difficult to imagine that a taxi could be used for a less than lawful purpose. There are steps that you can take, however, to ensure your safety when riding in one.
- Call a company that you are familiar with and that is reputable if you are calling a taxi to pick you up.
- Look at the state of the vehicle when it arrives or, if you hare hailing a cab, when it stops to pick you up. The cab should look to be in good condition and not too old. If the vehicle appears to be in a state of ill-repair, if it looks extremely old or in otherwise bad condition, do not take the ride. Turn the cab away and call or hail another car.
- Check for a license when you get in the car, before giving directions. If there is not a visible license it may be operating illegally and you should decline the ride.
- Ask the driver if he is familiar with the local area, particularly if you are hailing a cab as opposed to calling a well-known taxi company. If the driver doesn't appear to know the area this may be a sign that things are not as they appear and you should wait for the next cab.
- Pay close attention to the driver's demeanor. If he appears to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs of any kind do not use the cab. If you've called for the ride, contact the taxi company to express your concerns.
- Sit in the back seat of the vehicle with your cell phone readily available. This way you will be able to call a friend or 911 if the driver begins to take you someplace other than where you requested.
- Make a note of the driver's license number and put in a text that you can send if an emergency situation arises. If possible, take note of the license plate number as well.
