How to Use a Camera Lens Hood

Whether you are a professional photographer or just a person who likes to take pictures on special occasions, using a lens hood is a good idea. A lens hood serves the purpose of keeping stray light from ruining your pictures. Using a lens hood is especially important if you are taking pictures on a sunny day.

  1. Know
the make and model of your camera. In most cases, this will be enough
to learn the size lens hood that you will need for your camera. If
your camera has a different lens than it came with, you will have to
learn the size of the lens before you purchase a lens hood. Trying
to use a lens hood that does not fit your camera will give you
    unsatisfactory results.

  2. Determine
which style of lens hood you want to use. There are round lens hoods
and conical petal lens hoods. There are also lens hoods that have a
square shape. Petal hoods can produce more shade than round lens
hoods. The style that you choose will be based on your needs.

  3. Read
the instructions that came with your lens hood. See if the
instructions call for any special care when placing the lens hood
onto your camera. Most lens hoods will easily twist onto your camera
    lens in a clockwise motion.

  4. Look
through your camera at what you wish to take a picture of. Do not
change anything that you would normally do when taking a picture.
The lens hoods will automatically eliminate the unwanted light that
would normally make your picture less than desirable.

  5. Remove
the lens hood by twisting the lens hood in a counter-clockwise
    direction.
