How to Use a Diffuser Hair Dryer
Aside from using a blow dryer on the hair in the traditional method, many people also regularly use a diffuser attachment. Diffusers are designed to distribute the hot air more evenly over the entire head of hair, as opposed to a stronger, more direct heat source. This dries the hair while encouraging curly or wavy hair to retain the shape without frizzing.
- Apply your desired styling product to your hair while wet. Some may recommend a hair gel or mousse for curls, but these often tend to dry "crunchy." There are now a variety of curl enhancers to help retain your hair's natural shape. Leave in conditioners also ensure that your hair is soft.
- Turn on your hair dryer to its low or medium setting. Do not use a diffuser on a high setting as it may melt.
- Place the diffuser close to the roots of your hair, keeping it continuously moving. Because the diffuser disperses the heat, you can hold the blow dryer closer to your scalp without damaging your hair. A circular motion will allow your curls to form while drying.
- Flip your head upside down and use the diffuser similarly near your roots with your hair dangling down. This will result in added volume and lift in your hair.
- Place the diffuser close to the ends of your hair. Use your free hand to scoop up or scrunch your hair as you direct the diffuser towards the area. This will help enhance your natural curl or wave as well.
- Continue until your hair is completely dry.
- Change your blow dryer to a cool setting. With the diffuser still attached, finish off your hair with a blast of cool air. This helps to close the hair cuticles, setting the curl or wave and giving extra shine.
