How to Use a Manual Tire Changer

Changing a tire can be a daunting task. especially if you have to use an old fashioned manual tire changer. When equipped with the correct knowledge, changing a tire with a manual tire changer only takes a few momments of your time and will save a bundle.

  1. Find a flat surface to change the tires. Place the tire changer on a flat surface and secure it with the correct size corresponding bolt. Use a screwdriver and gentle pressure to remove the valve from each tire. Ensure that there is no damage to the hole and that the valve is intact once removed. A damaged valve will be no good when installing the new tire because the tire will not hold air.

  2. Remove the tire from the rim. Adjust the clamping device appropriately on the manual tire changer and support it around the tire firmly. The tire clamp device should be adjusted to 110 degrees for rounded rims or painted rim lips. Press the tire down firmly while using the bead lever tool provided in the manual tire changer kit to loosen it from the rim. Repeat this process on all sides of the tire until it is completely loose. Rotate the tire clockwise and without using a lot of force pull the tire from the rim that it is currently on.

  3. Lubricate the new replacement tire and mount it on the old rim. Use the supplied lubricant to generously lubricate the inner and outer edge of the replacement tire.  The tire should be well lubricated to ensure that it is not ruptured when mounting it on the rim. It is easy in this step to rupture the new tire. Take caution, be careful and take your time. Use the mount head on the manual tire changer to put the new tire on the rim once well lubricated. Lastly use the screwdriver to replace the air valve.
