How to Use an Abuse Hotline

Sadly abuse is an issue that will not disappear over night. With this fact it is important to utilize known methods to help victims of domestic and child abuse such as an abuse hotline. As you know abuse hotlines allow victims to call counselors to discuss their abuse and possibly allow the counselor to intervene and remove the victim from this horrible situation.

  1. Obtain a general understanding of psychology in terms of victims of abuse. By understanding what happens to these victims in a psychological standpoint it is easier to understand the needs of each victim.

  2. Learn communication skills that are necessary to allow the victim to feel safe and comfortable in discussing what is happening to them. Allowing this comfort zone aids you in gathering information pertaining to the abuse. It makes the victim feel that you are a confidant and that the information provided by the victim is between you and them. The point of an abuse hotline is to provide victims with an outlet to openly discuss their abuse and to ultimately seek help.

  3. Build a friendship with frequent callers. Do not push too hard but inform them that you are willing to help them. Give them breathing room and allow this friendship to build. Once this friendship is established it is easier to convince reluctant victims to allow you to intervene and help them by removing them from a violent situation before it is too late.

  4. Take steps to intervene when possible. By operating an abuse hotline you have access to agencies and organizations that offer help to abuse victims this includes abused children and victims of domestic violence. If you enable the victim to meet with you this enables you to connect them with these organizations that could provide them with a safe environment while their abusers are prosecuted.
