How to Use an Interior Decorator

Interior decorators create living spaces that offer beauty, function and style. After selecting a design firm or an independent interior designer, take advantage of their knowledge, taste and talent to ensure your newly decorated room looks great and reflects your personal aesthetic.

  • Determine your budget. Whether you are decorating one room or an entire house, have a realistic budget in mind prior to contacting your interior decorator. This will help them create a design that does not break your bank.

  • Consult with the decorator. Be honest with the person about your favorite design styles, your decorating dislikes and the budget. Tell them how you envision the space, covering important factors such as flooring, wall color, furniture and functionality.

  • Listen to the designer. Interior decorators are trained to create tasteful, beautiful interiors. Take their advice. If you feel unsure about a decision, talk to the decorator about other options.

  • Look for ideas. Go shopping with the decorator, visiting hardware stores, fabric retailers and furniture showrooms. You may also browse interior design magazines or websites for ideas.

  • Allow the interior decorator to complete your vision. Give your designer the freedom to carry out the decorating plans. Realize that the process will require other professionals to visit your home, including painters, electricians and furniture movers.

  • Understand that hiring an interior designer can be expensive. In most cases, decorators require a portion of the total project cost upfront. The first consultation and estimate may be complimentary.
