How to Use the London Public Transport System

London offers an expansive and well-developed public transport system.  Navigating the system can be very overwhelming to tourists and new city residents.  With a few simple tips, you will soon be able to travel around the city like a native London resident.

  1. Learn the city's bus and "Tube" routes.  The "Tube" is a system of underground railways that serve to transport people around the city.  Before you visit London, take the time to review the bus and Tube routes around the city that connect to your destination.  Visit the Transport for London website and utilize the interactive journey planner.  You will also be able to download route maps for reference.

  2. Learn about the city's zones.  London is divided into 9 travel zones.  Fares and travel times vary based on what zone you are in.  You can anticipate paying higher fares the further you are traveling from the center of the city.  If you are staying in London, look up the zone of the nearest Tube or bus station to gain an idea of local travel fares.

  3. Learn about the available Oyster cards.  Oyster cards are blue, plastic reusable cards that you will use to pay your bus and Tube fares.  You can choose the pay-as-you-go option, or choose a Travelcard.  A Travelcard gives you unlimited transportation use for a pre-determined period.  The pay-as-you-go option allows you to pay for each fare as you travel.  The city also offers a Visitor Oyster Card, which can only be purchased online prior to traveling.  Choose which card would best suit your needs and purchase it from the ticket office of a Tube station.  You can use the card to pay your fares as you tour the city.
