How to Verify Employment of a Potential Employee
Verifying the employment history of a potential employee is extremely important. This is a way for an employer to ensure the candidate has been honest on his or her application. The process is not difficult, but it is necessary to complete.
- Contact the previous employers provided on the candidates resume. Most companies have a job verification process through the human resources department. This information should be provided by the applicant. If you are not able to contact a human resource department, contact the supervisor listed by the candidate.
- Complete a background check on the potential employee. Background checks do more than provide employers with a criminal check of an applicant, but they also produce a work history record. This record cannot be falsified in anyway, but you should note that not all employment may show on this report.
- Check with references provided. The professional and personal reference provided by the potential employee should be called. These people can help verify where and how long the individual work at a particular place. Though this is not a formal verification, it can provide you with a sense of assurance about a person.
- Ask questions about indirections. If any indiscretions arise during the verification process, you should contact the potential employee regarding them. Do not assume the person lied intentionally; it could be a typographical error. It could also just be a misunderstanding. It is best to ask questions before jumping to any conclusions about the situation.
