How to Volunteer at a Humane Society

The Humane Society is the largest animal protection agency in the United States. They advocate for animal rights, encourage adoption of abandoned animals and rescue abused animals. Whether working in legal system to help create laws to protect animals or in the shelters caring for the animals, many volunteers are needed in the Humane Society.

  1. Go to the Human Society webpage. On the right hand side of the webpage, you will see several ways to volunteer with the Humane Society. Under Take Action, click on one of the options and follow the instructions.

  2. On this same page, you can also volunteer to help finance the endeavors of the Humane Society. Click on Donate and enter your information.

  3. A free way to support the Human Society is to sign up for their informational newsletters. This is a great way to show your support by being aware of the actions and productivity of the Humane Society.

  4. You can also click on the Shop section and purchase products with the Human Society logo. Your purchases of these products will support local and nationwide Human Society agencies.

  5. If you are not sure you want to volunteer or help at the national level through this website, there are many things you can do locally that will help save the lives of many animals.

    • Write letters to politicians and law makers to inform them of the needs of animals in your area.

    • Reduce your eating habits to avoid meats that are produced in an inhumane manner.

    • Purchase cruelty-free cosmetics and household products.

    • Adopt a pet from a local shelter instead of a breeder.

    • Spay or neuter your pets.

    • Encourage local pet stores to join the 850 stores that have joined the Humane Society’s Puppy Friendly Pet Stores initiative, eliminating puppy mill sales.

    • Volunteer your time to a local animal shelter.
