How to Volunteer at a Pet Service
If you have made the decision to volunteer your time at a pet service, good choice! The best experience is hands on experience, and you are sure to get plenty of that at a pet service provider. Be prepared to start with the smaller, or less appealing tasks, though. The provider needs to get comfortable with you and teach you so you are prepared.
- Create a resume. That's right, a resume. It's not that you are actually applying for a job, but that the company or person with whom you are applying needs to know what skills and experience you are bringing.
- Call around to various places that offer pet services. You can find them in the Yellow Pages and see their advertisements in newspapers if you don't know of any.
- Give them a call and ask the manager for an interview at his/her convenience. They may say that it is not required, but it certainly tells them you are taking the opportunity very seriously, and that is important.
- Bring your resume and a can-do attitude to the interview. Pet service isn't exactly an illustrious job and may require lots of dirty work. A can-do attitude says you are willing. Let the manager see that.
- Show off your skills just a little bit if given the opportunity, perhaps during a walk-through of the facility, but not in an arrogant way.
- Show that you are confident and want to help.
- Bring your best to your work when you finally get that opportunity to volunteer. It's hard to say where a volunteering position can lead to in the future, so you want to make the best impression with everyone there.
