How to Wash Leather Tennis Shoes

Washing shoes made of any kind of material is best left as an occasional maintenance process. The delicate construction of shoes makes them susceptible to wear and tear. Leather shoes require special care, so learn how to wash them before you get started.

Items Needed:

  • Saddle soap

  • A soft cloth

  1. Read the tag on the inside of the shoe for any specific cleaning instructions. While instructions may not be present on all shoes, many pairs feature care tags that will let you know what cleaning methods are appropriate.

  2. Use a solution of saddle soap and water to clean the outside of leather shoes. Make a half and half mixture and dip a soft cloth into the solution. Wring out any excessive moisture and begin buffing the shoes in a circular pattern. Rinse off your cloth when necessary to get fresh soapy water.

  3. Use a toothbrush or cotton swab to get into areas that may be hard to reach.

  4. Wash your shoes in the washing machine if hand-washing them doesn’t remove a sufficient amount of dirt. Run a small load of warm or cold water and add half a cup of saddle soap. Remove the shoelaces from your shoes and place them inside the washer tub.

  5. Run the machine on a delicate cycle and check on them regularly. Use a short cycle and allow the shoes to remain in the washing machine through the rinse cycle. Once the cycle is complete, remove the shoes and shake out any excessive water.

  6. Place the shoes in a cool, dry area to dry off. Avoid putting them in harsh light or heat, as this may cause cracking.
